Thief nabbed trying to sell stolen goods online

It was a done deal as far as gardaí were concerned when they collared a young man who was trying to sell equipment he’d stolen on the internet.

Gardaí believe the man had been responsible for a mini crimewave in North West Cork and East Kerry in recent weeks, during which he stole thousands of euro worth of lawnmowers, powerwashers, and tools.

The thefts took place over the past two weeks from sheds and garages in Rathmore, Co Kerry and from the Boherbue, Cullen, and Millstreet areas in Co Cork.

The 22-year-old was driving a borrowed 4x4 and was also robbing number plates from garages.

Gardaí said he would attach the false number plates to the vehicle when he was on a spree so if he was spotted it could throw them off the scent.

However, he met his downfall after a man searching came across a powerwasher which had been stolen from him.

Insp Tony Sugrue said: “The injured party contacted the seller and agreed to meet him in Charleville where he would buy the powerwasher. He then contacted the gardaí and they also went to Charleville where they arrested the young man.”

Gardaí also seized what they believe to be stolen equipment from the jeep the man was driving.

Insp Sugrue confirmed that during a follow-up operation gardaí also recovered more stolen equipment at another location associated with the man.

He was arrested at about 11pm on Wednesday and taken to Kanturk Garda Station. The man, understood to be from the Kanturk area, was subsequently released without charge. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

Insp Sugrue commended the quick-thinking of the man whose powerwasher had been stolen. “If people have property stolen and see it for sale over the internet they should contact their local gardaí straight away.”

Gardaí are meanwhile trying to reunite the stolen items with their owners.
