Is €10.6m Lotto jackpot Lar’s latest accolade?
The 31-year-old Tipperary hurler is currently in New York with fellow GAA stars to help rebuild youth sports facilities in Breezy Point, which was hit by the recent Superstorm Sandy.
He was doorstepped by the media as he arrived at JFK Airport and was asked whether the rumours were true that he had won the top prize in Wednesday’s Lotto draw.
Rather than deny the rumour outright it is understood he said he played the lottery with his partner/business manager and that he was the person to talk to. That partner is believed to be Kevin Coppinger with whom he has collaborated to set up Lar Corbett’s Bar at Coppinger’s in Thurles, which opened in 2011.
Calls to Mr Coppinger’s number went unanswered last night.
When the bar was contacted, a man who called himself Brian and confirmed he was the manager, said Mr Coppinger was not available.
“He can’t be got,” he said. “It’s definitely him.”
The Tipperary star was the 2010 hurler of the year and scored a hat-trick in the final that year.
The winning ticket, a quick-pick, was sold at Scanlon’s shop in Liberty Square, Thurles.
Owner Vincent Scanlon said he does not know who the €10.6m Lotto winner is.
It is the second time Mr Scanlon, who has been trading at Liberty Square for 21 years, has sold the Lotto jackpot ticket.
