Holes in case against Brady, say lawyers

Aisling McCarthy Brady, 34, from Co Cavan, is in jail awaiting a trial that may not take place until the end of the year.
Baby Rehma Sabir died last week from a massive brain swelling which is alleged to have been caused by an incident two days earlier when she was in Ms McCarthy Brady’s care.
When emergency services found Rehma, she had a broken leg and arm and was bleeding severely from her head and eyes.
However, Ms McCarthy Brady’s lawyer, Melinda Thompson, has said her client “is innocent of all charges”. She argues that the court documents show numerous people had access to Rehma the day she died, and something could have happened during trips to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
She said Ms Brady had not been minding Rehma full-time in recent months as she had been away, and that family members had been helping out. “The child was on an extended trip to London before Christmas time,” said Ms Thompson. “Ms Brady did not go with the family so she did not see the child for a long time.
“She got back from London and the child was sick, not dying, but with a baby flu. The doctor said she was malnourished and advised that she not go on the next trip, which they had scheduled.
“I am not questioning the parents but they took her to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. They were away for three weeks. When they came home the extended family started coming in leading up to the birthday party.
“They are saying she shook her. My real problem with the case is that I can’t understand how you can shake a child that violently and cause those injuries without leaving a single mark... not a fingerprint, not a handprint.
“There seems to be a lot of holes in this case."
