Two brothers were in a critical condition in hospital last night after their car was involved in a horror road crash.

Their car in which the brothers, believed to be aged in their 70s, collided with a 4x4 at around 2.15pm near Herbert’s Pub, Lisnagry, Co Limerick, on the old main Limerick-Dublin road.

A passerby said the car landed about 20 metres off the road, coming to halt in front of Walsh’s local shop.

“I’m shaken up by it. I’ve seen one or two crashes before but this one was a bad one,” the witness said.

The two brothers had to be cut out of their vehicle by fire fighters after they were trapped in their car. Three fire engines from Limerick City attended the aftermath of the crash.

Two ambulances from Limerick City, which carried the occupants of the car and the driver of the 4x4 to hospital, were backed up by an ambulance from Scarrif, Co Clare.

The driver of the 4x4 was in a stable condition, having sustained minor injuries.

The road was closed for a number of hours for a technical and forensic examination of the scene, carried out by gardaí.

Officers attached to Henry Street Garda station in Limerick City are investigating the crash.

They appealed for witnesses to contact them on 061 212400.
