Paedophile from UK found drunk in Limerick

A child sex offender ordered by an English judge not to leave Britain was found staggering in a drunken state on a Co Limerick road, a court heard yesterday.

David Chulan, aged 51, had an “extensive list from the UK in relation to sexual offences” involving children, Kilmallock Court heard.

Supt Alan Cunningham said that on Apr 19 last a judge in Britain prohibited Chulan, of no fixed abode, from travelling to a country outside the UK for five years to protect children generally from sexual harm.

However, on Dec 2 following a report of a man staggering on the N20 near O’Rourke’s Cross, Garda Ken O’Day arrested Chulan. Chulan’s background emerged when gardaí at Bruff station checked his history.

Chulan told gardaí: “If I was aware I had to sign on I would not have come.”

Supt Cunningham told Judge Mary Larkin that Chulan was under no illusions that he was not to leave the UK.

Having been fined and receiving a suspended jail sentence for failing to notify the authorities here of his presence, gardaí brought Chulan to Dublin where he is now awaiting extradition to Britain.

Supt Cunningham said: “It’s a serious danger to the community to have these people walking around.”

Judge Larkin said another court in the UK made a serious order against Chulan that he was not to leave for another jurisdiction and she did not accept that he was ignorant of this matter.

Chulan said he had been in Patrickswell and in Croom on Dec 2 where he stopped for drinks. He was arrested at about 5.30pm. When arrested he would not give his first name and was unstable on his feet due to alcohol. Gardaí arrested him for his own safety.
