Rejection of amendment in keeping with treaty ‘no’ vote

Just three of the country’s 43 constituencies voted no.

They were Donegal North East, Donegal South West, and Dublin North West.

Donegal North East rejected the amendment by 59.66% to 40.34%. The turnout was 24.47%.

Donegal South West rejected it by 56.47% to 43.53%, on a turnout of 23.81%.

Dublin North West said no by a wafer-thin margin of 50.39% to 49.61% — amounting to a difference of just 137 votes — on a turnout of 36.08%.

The results are in keeping with recent strong protest votes in these heavily working-class constituencies. In the fiscal treaty referendum earlier this year, all three also said no, but were joined by two others — Dublin South Central and Dublin South West.

The overall result in yesterday’s referendum was 58% yes to 42% no. But there was significant variance in constituencies across the country.

Cork North Central, the constituency of Labour’s director of elections for the campaign, Kathleen Lynch, passed the amendment, but very narrowly.

The result was 50.09% yes against 49.91% no — a difference of just 47 votes — with a 33.41% turnout.

The constituencies most in favour of the amendment were Dublin South, Dublin South East, and Dún Laoghaire — three of the most prosperous areas in the country.

Dublin South, the constituency of Justice Minister Alan Shatter, voted yes by 73.03% to 26.97% on a turnout of 40.92%.

Dublin South East supported the amendment by 71.87% to 28.13% on a turnout of 33.44%.

Dún Laoghaire, the constituency of Tánaiste and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore, said yes by 71.57% to 28.43% on a turnout of 41.54%.

The Taoiseach’s constituency of Mayo voted yes by 53.01% to 46.99%, on a turnout of 32.11%.

Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald, who led the Government’s campaign, saw her Dublin Mid West constituency vote yes by 55.21% to 44.79% on a 35.27% turnout.
