Abolishing town council indicates ‘dire’ future for Killarney

Killarney will face “dire consequences” because of the forthcoming abolition of its town council, it has been claimed.

Killarney mayor Sean O’Grady said far less funding would be available to match the level of investment that had transformed the appearance of the town and led to outright success in the 2011 Tidy Towns competition.

He said the town council had spent €1.2m on refurbishing Main Street and was spending €830,000 annually on street cleaning, with very little financial help from Kerry County Council, which would have direct control of Killarney from 2014.
