Tiernan laughs way to the bank

DVD sales and sell-out gigs across the globe last year pushed accumulated profits at two entertainment firms owned by comedian Tommy Tiernan to almost €500,000 last year.

Tiernan has long been one of Ireland’s most popular — and controversial — comedians. New accounts for his two firms show combined accumulated profits at the end of December last year increased to €489,492.

Combined profits at Mabinog Ltd and Mabinog Publishing Ltd increased from €423,011 to €489,492 last year.

Tiernan’s earnings were boosted last year by his best-selling DVD, Crooked Man, released in Nov 2011, while the comic also toured Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The Galway-based comedian and father of five, due to perform at a sold-out gig as part of the Bulmers Galway Comedy Festival tonight, also continued extensive touring of Ireland and Britain in 2011.

The directors of the two Mabinog companies are Navan-born Tiernan and his wife and manager, Yvonne.

The figures for Mabinog Ltd show a positive swing in profits of €256,869 last year, improving from a deficit of €184,277 to an accumulated profit of €72,592.

The figures show that cash at the firm decreased sharply, from €405,254 to €40,234, but that this was offset by monies owed to the firm rising from €13,217 to €537,187.

Figures for Tiernan’s other firm, Mabinog Publishing Ltd, show that accumulated profits fell last year, from €607,288 to €416,899.

Tiernan has said in the past that “the money thing doesn’t interest me”.

Tiernan, who spent five to six years on the dole before earning a living from comedy, told RTÉ last year: “I didn’t get into stand-up for the money. I never thought I would earn a living from stand-up.

“We can’t allow ourselves to become defined by money. If being alive is solely an economic experience, we’re screwed.”

On his love of being a stand-up comedian, Tiernan said: “I think it is a great job. I love it. Getting up in front of people and making them laugh — it’s stunning.”

Mabinog Ltd did not respond to a request for comment yesterday.
