Clayton’s Central Park padfor sale
Bono sold his 16th floor apartment there in 2008 for $4.9m (€3.73m) after buying a bigger apartment just down the street. It has now become the Hewson family’s US base and is used by his two daughters who live in New York.
Now Clayton has put his fourth-floor, three-bedroom property on the market for $8.7m.
The listing by Halstead Property shows a large co-op with a 38ft gallery, a formal dining room, and seven large windows facing onto Central Park.
The Eldorado is just one of a number of Central Park West co-operatives that have welcomed major celebrities over the years. These include actors Faye Dunaway, Michael J Fox, and Alec Baldwin, as well as the musician Moby.
Clayton has put plenty of work into his property since he bought it in the early 1990s, said Linda Reiner, a broker who has lived in the building for nearly three decades.
It had initially been chopped into two separate units, but Clayton recombined them, after buying them separately. He modified the apartment’s original layout, creating a master bedroom suite with a large bathroom and a 9ft by 10ft dressing room. He also replaced two maids’ rooms with a 22ft eat-in kitchen, complete with a butler’s pantry.
Ms Reiner added: “Central Park West is basically friendly to celebrities, but nobody wants someone who will disturb the quality of life.”
Brokers said Bono took a major loss on selling his apartment, which he is alleged to have bought from the late Apple founder Steve Jobs for $14.5m. Jobs had never moved into it.
Emma Kerins of Halstead Property said the property only went on the market earlier this month. It is not clear why Clayton, who owns luxury homes around the world, has decided to sell at this time.
