A worthless asset

The first anniversary of the evacuation of the Priory Hall apartment complex falls tomorrow. Those forced from their homes are trapped by the past as they look to the future, reports Noel Baker

A worthless asset

THE newest tenants in Stephanie Meehan’s top floor apartment are just as messy as the last lot. First the pigeons had taken up residence in the kitchen. Now it’s the crows, a pair of them perched on the balcony, taking in the views that reach from Howth Head all the way around to Malahide.

Stephanie, a restaurant manager and mother-of-two, has grown used to intruders into what was, for four years, the home she shared with her partner, Fiachra Daly, and their son, Oisín. Eighteen months ago their daughter Cerys was born and came home to this place. Split over two floors and 1,100sq ft, it was bought with a mortgage taken out in 2007 worth €298,000, spread over 30 years. For Stephanie it was money well spent. “It was gorgeous,” she says of her old home.
