Fun and frolics for young and old as sun begins to shine... finally

With the summer festival season almost over and the sun set to belatedly beam in its aftermath, you may be feeling at a loss for something to do over the weekend.

Despair not, however. A feast of festivals and events awaits you across Cork and Kerry.

Get your bucket and spade at the ready and head down to West Cork for the Rosscarbery family festival, kicking off today.

The festival promises 10 days jampacked with activities for young and old, including live pub music, a range of things to do for kids, and a sandcastle and sculpture competition.

Cork craft month also kicks off this weekend, running until the end of September. Dig out old knitting needles and balls of wool, and discover your inner artisan.

Exhibitions will line Cork City streets including those by furniture makers and printmakers, and one featuring musical instruments. Meet the maker days, craft trails, and pop-up fairs will also dot the city from this weekend onwards.

Or, if you’re a fan of the fillies, why not head to the Millstreet Horse Show, which claims to be Ireland’s largest annual equestrian event.

The event has already kicked off in Millstreet at the Green Glens arena and runs until Sunday. And with free admission, it’s sure to be a hit with horse lovers.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not head across to Kerry to one of Ireland’s oldest and most famous festivals?

If you like your local myths and legends, the history behind the origin of Puck Fair and the goat will keep you satisfied. If not, the activities starting tonight and running until Sunday, most definitely should.

The streets of Killorglin will come alive with street performers, plenty of live music, including a Garth Brooks tribute act, and cattle and horse fairs.

If you’re a father wanting some downtime with your son, grab your best driver and tee off at the World International Father and Son Golf Tournament, taking place at Carr Golf in Waterville, Co Kerry, running until Sunday.

And remember, even if the rain clouds do return on Sunday, you can always nip into your local for a free pint of Murphy’s, with their new smartphone app promising 1,000 free pints each day it rains.
