Gardaí to probe assault at GAA match

A member of the White’s Cross GAA football team, it was claimed, was assaulted during a challenge match with Fermoy.

The match took place at the Fermoy GAA grounds on the evening of Jul 7 last.

The victim, it was claimed, was headbutted in the face during the second half of the game which White’s Cross won.

He was later taken to Cork University Hospital where he received medical treatment for the injury.

The injured party, who is understood to be in his mid-20s, later made a complaint at a Garda station in Cork City.

The complaint was then passed onto gardaí in Fermoy who will investigate it because the alleged assault took place in their jurisdiction.

A senior garda spokesman said Fermoy gardaí will be carrying out a full investigation.

“We expect to interview all the match officials at the game and all the players who took part in the match,” he said.
