The victim, named unofficially as 24-year-old Daniel Kenny from Athlone, Co Westmeath, plunged from an eighth-storey balcony on the island of Mallorca at about 3am. He had flown out to the island resort over the weekend.

Paramedics who raced to the scene spent 50 minutes trying to revive him, but he died from his injuries.

The incident happened at the beachfront Globales Verdemar Apartments in Santa Ponsa, a popular resort with Irish holidaymakers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the man’s family. He is the fourth tourist to fall to their death on Mallorca this year.

Three British people died in falls in the Mallorcan resort of Magaluf in less than a month earlier this year.

The 20-year-old was climbing a stairwell in the hotel when he lost his balance.

He lost his balance as he leaned over his balcony while smoking.
