A special care unit for teenage girls in Cork has some considerable way to go to ensure the centre can be considered a safe and positive environment.

Teenage girls’ care unit not yet a safe and positive environment, finds report

That is according to a Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report into conditions at the Gleann Alainn Special Care Unit (SCU) in Cork.

The previous HIQA audit of the centre in January of this year recorded teenage girls reporting unacceptable incidents of bullying and assault by other residents, while last October’s audit reported that the unit was in a state of crisis due mainly to the poor standard of management and the day-to-day practises of staff.
