Charges expected in fatal stabbing

Gardaí are confident of bringing charges in relation to the fatal stabbing of a machete-wielding youth in a row that spiralled out of control in west Dublin early yesterday morning.

Charges expected in fatal stabbing

Colm Hughes, also known as Colm Lyons, died after being repeatedly stabbed just yards from his home on Fortlawn Avenue, Blanchardstown, at around 1.30am.

Garda sources said that Hughes, aged 20, was brandishing a machete and threatening a couple on the road when the other male, also 20, went into his girlfriend’s house, armed himself with a kitchen knife, came back out and stabbed Hughes in the stomach.

Hughes was brought to nearby James Connolly Memorial Hospital where surgeons fought to save his life. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead several hours later.

Gardaí arrested a man at the scene and took him to Blanchardstown Garda Station, where he was detained under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows for up to 24 hours’ detention.

It is understood the youth, from nearby Mulhuddart, has co-operated fully with detectives and has admitted his role. However, sources said they will not move to charge him until they have conducted interviews with witnesses and get the results of forensic and DNA tests.

Garda sources said they are keeping a close eye on the area where tensions are high.

Sources said the culprit had previously been known as a “good lad” who had not come to Garda attention.

Gardaí said Hughes was well known to gardaí and had a reputation for criminality. Sources said he carried out a serious assault on a man two weeks ago in a robbery and nearly left him victim for dead.

Hughes’ father, Rory Lyons, was jailed for eight years in 2007 after being caught with €500,000 worth of cocaine in a drug factory.

Detectives are speaking to the culprit’s girlfriend, who has been left heavily traumatised by the incident.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have information to contact Blanchardstown Garda Station on 01 6667000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any station.
