Son of murdered man issues appeal

The son of an electrician beaten and left to die in his burning home has told how his father was one of the gentlest people he has ever known.

James Cahillane, 58, suffered several head injuries in an assault at his rural house in Ardraw, Beaufort, Co Kerry, before his home was then set alight as he lay unconscious on Apr 19.

His son, Gary, who is in his 20s, is set to plead for information on the killing of the father of two on RTÉ’s Crimecall tonight.

He said he was at a loss to understand why his father was beaten in his home after being dropped there by taxi at about midnight from the town of Killorglin three miles away.

“Confrontation wasn’t part of him and he really was the least aggressive guy that I’ve ever met and someone, instead of robbing him, they probably could have asked him for money. He would have given it to them.

“There’s no justification for what’s happened. You’d lose a bit of faith in humanity when you hear that things like this are happening.”

“We know there’s no easy way of getting through this. I’m appealing for people not to be afraid to come forward if they have any information because without answers it’s hard to have closure.”

He said his outgoing dad was very sociable and loved meeting people in the Kerry town for games of cards.

In the early hours of Apr 19 the fire brigade was called to the home of James Cahillane after neighbours raised the alarm.

Mr Cahillane was discovered inside the front door but an autopsy revealed James’ death was not a result of the fire and a murder enquiry was launched four days later.

Crimecall is to piece together Mr Cahillane’s last hours by using a reconstruction and CCTV footage.

It is thought the fire was startedat around 2am and one of the neighbours raised the alarm when her dog began to bark wildly.

* Crimecall will be shown on RTÉ One tonight at 10.15pm.
