3D tracking technology for ships to be unveiled

New 3D tracking technology which will make it much safer for ships entering and exiting harbours will be unveiled for the first time next week at an international conference in Cork.

More than 300 delegates attending the International Harbour Masters’ Association (IHMA) congress will view firsthand the system developed by GeoVS, a University of Glamorgan spin-off company based in Cardiff.

GeoVS technical director Dr Rafal Goralski will discuss the new technology at the congress which takes place from Monday to Thursday at City Hall.

A number of other pioneering developments in maritime research will also be unveiled at the congress, which is being held in Ireland for the first time.

Captain Pat Farnan, Port of Cork harbour master, said it was a great opportunity to showcase the city and its port facilities to global delegates.

Delegates will also be treated to tours of Cobh Heritage Centre, the Port of Cork, the National Maritime College of Ireland and the Jameson Distillery at Midleton.

“Cork Harbour is steeped in maritime heritage and I am certain that there will be historical connections as well as commercial connections with the many countries represented at the congress,” Capt Farnan said.

More than 30 leading industry figures will speak at the congress which will feature a trade exhibition mounted by companies from 40 different countries.

Delegates will come from as far away as Australia, Bahrain and Canada.

Capt Farnan said the congress will address the changing landscape of ports and how these changes are redefining the role of harbour masters in the future.
