Man in court over fatal knife attack

A man charged with serious assault arising out of a fatal stabbing in Cork at the weekend has appeared in Cork District Court.

Timothy Kelleher, aged 25, was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mark Hanlon at Infirmary Rd, Cork, on May 6.

Mark Hanlon, a 31-year-old father of one from Lotamore, Cork, died as a result of his injuries in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Garda Derek Barnett charged Mr Kelleher with the serious assault contrary to the Non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act. Garda Barnett testified that after caution, Mr Kelleher replied: “I think I have said everything in the interviews anyway.”

Judge Leo Malone asked what the defendant’s circumstances were in relation to the issue of free legal aid. Emmet Boyle, solicitor, replied: “He is not working, he is of no means.”

The judge then granted legal aid.

Inspector Finbarr O’Sullivan applied to have the accused remanded in custody with consent to bail on certain conditions until tomorrow at Cork District Court. Bail conditions are as follows: His own bond of €200; an independent surety of €5,000, no lodgement, the surety to be approved by the court; surrender his passport; that he has no contact with any of the witnesses, directly or indirectly; that he reside at apartment 28, Block A, South Terrace apartments, Cork; that he sign on at Anglesea St Garda Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 9am and 9pm.

Mr Kelleher, who has a short black beard and wore a grey hoodie and dark tracksuit pants, was not required to speak during yesterday’s hearing.
