On your bike for Munster tour
The Munster and Ireland star attended the launch of this year’s Tour de Munster, which has raised €500,000 over the last two years.
The tour sees amateur cyclists ride some 600km through the six counties of Munster over four days.
DSI branches across the province are again set to benefit from this year’s event, from Aug 9 to 12.
Fundraiser Michael O’Gorman, whose son David has Down Syndrome, said he was delighted DSI will benefit again. “Last year was amazing, when the tour raised a mammoth €300,000,” he said.
“We couldn’t have expected more from this great fundraising event and feel extremely honoured to have been selected for the third year in a row.”
He said DSI aims to help children born with Down Syndrome to be as independent as possible.
“To achieve this, it is imperative that when they are young they have access to speech therapy and occupational therapy and as they grow older we want to help them with other areas of their lives such as independent living and employment opportunities,” he said.
“The objective is to ensure that each individual is developed to his or her full potential. This all requires a lot of funding.”
Tour organiser Paul Sheridan is already in training for the event.
“We are reminded each time we meet these wonderful children that we are working towards a very worthy cause,” he said.
The Irish Examiner is once again supporting the event, with other media partners including Red FM, Spin South West, Clare FM, Tipp FM and WLR FM.
