Man may have stabbed himself to death after row

Gardaí suspect a Polish man killed himself after he slashed a countryman in a row over a former girlfriend.

The tragic incident began outside Gregorz Guzik’s rented house on a residential street in Tullamore, Co Offaly, yesterday morning.

Gardaí said the row erupted when Mr Guzik’s former partner and her new boyfriend turned up at the house sometime before 7am. The cause of the row is unclear and there were conflicting reports.

One account being investigated by gardaí is that the woman wanted to bring her child with her, but that Mr Guzik, the father, refused to allow this to happen.

It is thought Mr Guzik, aged 30, had known she had started a relationship with another man before yesterday’s incident.

It is understood Mr Guzik had only recently returned to Ireland from abroad and it is thought that while he was away, his partner started a new relationship.

Gardaí believe Mr Guzik attacked his former lover’s new boyfriend with a knife and slashed him across the arms and face.

It is understood the woman and her boyfriend told detectives that Mr Guzik then stabbed himself.

It is thought they alerted emergency services. Gardaí said Mr Guzik was found inside the house with knife wounds and that he later died in hospital.

They are investigating suspicions he killed himself but have not ruled out other possibilities.

A Garda spokesman said: “A 30-year-old man was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore suffering from what appears to be stab wounds where he subsequently died a short time later from his injuries.”

The injured man was released from hospital last night.

The house and a car parked outside were sealed off pending a technical examination.
