EU legislation which provides compensation to passengers for cancelled flights could be posing a risk to the safety of aircraft, according to a leading aviation organisation.

The head of the European Regional Airline Association told an international aviation safety conference in Dublin that there was a need for a revision of the existing legislation.

ERA director general Mike Ambrose criticised the EU regulation which provides for payments of up €250 per passenger for all flights of less than 1,500km and €600 for all flights in excess of 3,500km.
