Riverdance spin-off group jig their way to semi-final of hit TV show
Prodijig are dancers from the tour of Riverdance who want to transform mainstream Irish dancing with their hip-hop twist and prove that it can be cool.
In the first live semi-final, Prodijig won their place to compete in the live Got to Dance grand finale on March 4, moving one step closer to winning the £250,000 (€300,750) cash prize.
Prodijig is made up of seven Irish dancers, five boys and two girls, ranging in age from 21 to 27.
Choreographer and lead dancer Alan Kenefick, 27, from Silversprings Court, Cork City, said they were astonished with the reception they have received since entering the competition: “We spent a lot of time working on the routines. Even when we were in Riverdance we would rent a studio and spend up to four hours of our own time training.
“The choreography is unique and personal to us, that’s what makes the positive response so special.”
All seven dancers left Riverdance to set up the group. Alan, who began Irish dancing at age 9, said they had sacrificed a lot and it had finally paid off.
“We all decided to leave Riverdance and move to Belfast to form the group. We gave up a lot financially and emotionally to make it work. Winning the final would be the pinnacle and would mark the start of something amazing.”
Got to Dance, hosted by Davina McCall, scoured Britain and Ireland for the best crews, dance troupes and solo dancers.
The Irish dancing sensation wowed the judges during their audition, and received a standing ovation.
* The Got to Dance grand finale will be broadcast on Sky 1 at 6pm on March 4.
