Hospital chief takes up post at ‘critical time’

One of the HSE South’s most senior backroom officials has been appointed the new chief executive of the Mercy University Hospital.

Hospital chief takes up post at ‘critical time’

Sandra Daly, who was previously the service’s general manager for the Cork area office, begins her role at the second-largest medical facility in Cork today at a time described as “critical and challenging” for the health sector.

Announcing the appointment, the hospital’s chairman Des Murphy described the new chief executive as a highly talented and experienced official who has a clear understanding of both frontline and budgetary needs.

“Sandra takes up her role at both a critical and challenging time,” he said.

“She is ideally placed to lead the hospital to the next phase of its development, ably supported by the professional staff of the hospital, and has the vision and enthusiasm to develop the hospital over the coming years.

“Sandra was directly involved in the management of health and social care services in Cork, including acute hospitals, primary, community and continuing care and mental health services. Earlier in her career Sandra worked in Cork University Hospital as a business manager.”

Ms Daly will replace Pat Madden, who leaves next month after six years in the post and 43 years in the health service.

The outgoing chief executive said he will mark his departure “with a profound sense of gratitude for having the privilege to work for one of the finest hospitals in the country”.
