Shoppers warned about Christmas pickpockets

SHOPPERS and retailers have been warned to be extra vigilant over Christmas as they are being targeted by shoplifters and pickpockets.

Shoppers warned about Christmas pickpockets

The Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) warned businesses and consumers that such crime was on the rise, blaming the recession for the surge in criminal activities.

The direct shoplifting cost to retailers this year will be in excess of €200 million, of which €40m will occur over Christmas.

This cost does not take into account the amount spent on security, which adds hundreds of millions onto the cost, ISME said.

ISME estimates that half of all retail outlets will be targeted by shoplifters over Christmas.

The association’s chief executive Mark Fielding said Christmas is the ideal time for criminals to prey on retailers and customers.

“There is no doubt that criminals see the Christmas period as the ideal opportunity, with larger crowds in stores, more stock on shelves and an increase in temporary staff, who may not have the experience to identify shoplifters.”

“Alcohol, electronic goods, toiletries, clothing and food products are the most common items targeted by thieves, causing huge financial damage to retailers up and down the country” he said.
