Three in custody over death threats against reporter

The Sunday World’s crime reporter Mick McCaffrey was forced to leave his home and start varying his daily routine after an article he wrote about a hitman in July angered a prominent and dangerous Dublin criminal.

While that criminal was, at the time, on remand in prison in relation to other serious crimes, he allegedly had a credible threat issued to Mr McCaffrey.

A detective in Kevin Street Garda station was also the victim of threats in the ensuing period.

Over the last two months, gardaí have been investigating the incidents.

This week six people were arrested for questioning.

The criminal at the centre of the threat was among them.

He was taken from prison, held in Kevin Street Garda station and questioned for 24 hours before being brought back to prison.

Last night, three people, a man and two women, were still being detained under anti-gang legislation at that Garda station.

They can be held without charge until this morning.

The inmate behind the alleged threat is a member of one of Dublin’s most infamous family-centred criminal gangs which includes two convicted killers, one of whom is serving a life sentence.

The man is also a suspect in the case of a young Romanian woman who was abducted while begging and is now presumed dead.
