Five gang members questioned over murders

FIVE members of Limerick’s McCarthy Dundon gang were brought from prison yesterday to Garda stations in Limerick and Dublin and questioned about three murders carried out by the gang.

Five gang members questioned over murders

They were arrested at Wheatfield, Cloverhill, Midlands and Limerick prisons under Section 42 of the Offences Against the State Act.

They were quizzed about the murders of Roy Collins in April 2009, Shane Geoghegan in November 2008, and James Cronin in April 2008. Roy Collins was targeted because a relative gave evidence which led to the jailing of gang leader Wayne Dundon, while Shane Geoghegan was shot when mistaken for a drugs dealer who lived near him at Kilteragh, Dooradoyle.

James Cronin was a member of the gang and had been involved in the murder of Mark Moloney days before his own gang decided to murder him.

Meanwhile arrangements were being made for the funeral of Anne McCarthy Dundon, mother of the gang leaders, who was killed when hit by a 4x4 in London where she has lived for more than 30 years. Her remains will be brought to Limerick for burial in the family grave.

Meanwhile, it emerged yesterday that a number of men jailed for feud related incidents in Limerick were brought in handcuffs to a funeral home in recent days to pay their respects to their mother. It is believed gardaí and the Court Service agreed to the request as the family members have distanced themselves from the McCarthy Dundons.
