Believe it or not... gaol set for supernatural gathering

IN keeping with the spirit of Halloween, tonight’s 11th World Ghost Convention at Cork City Gaol provides a timely opportunity for people fascinated with the supernatural to take part in an evening dedicated to the topic.

Believe it or not... gaol set for supernatural gathering

A panel of international guest speakers from various backgrounds and professions will attend. They include Dr Margaret Humphreys of University College Cork’s Folklore and Ethnology Department; Dr Eve Bruce, a medical doctor and shaman who spent 15 years with indigenous elders from the Andes and Amazon, along with Helen Barrett, White Witch of the Isles and the leader of 3,500 Irish witches and wizards.

At the convention, people who have experienced supernatural happenings will have the chance to share their accounts with like-minded individuals.

“Often people are embarrassed or ashamed to articulate their experiences in this area,” said Catherine Courtney, event organiser. “This kind of gathering allows them a forum to share their thoughts on what they may have seen or felt about the supernatural.”

The convention was originally established to help raise public awareness of the supernatural, as well as providing a non-judgmental platform to share experiences and explore the topic in greater depth.

“The fact that it takes place in Cork City Gaol is definitely part of the attraction for many attending.

“The ancient structure, the resident ghost seen by many people over the years, and the magical atmosphere found there after darkness falls certainly adds to the evening,” Ms Courtney said.

Previous audiences have ranged across all age groups, genders and professions.

Ms Courtney said: “We have doctors, nurses, office workers and technicians from many different walks of life talking about their spiritual experiences.”

Helen Barrett, one of the evening’s most anticipated speakers, will discuss preventive strategies and signs used by ghosts.

* Tonight, 8pm, Cork City Gaol, €25.
