THE banking culture which had a devastating impact on the Irish economy continues to exist through the conduct of senior management at the country’s banks, according to a leading financial trade union.

Banking culture still in place, says trade union

IBOA — the finance union which represents 22,000 staff in financial institutions — claimed the culture of pursuing sales and placing intense pressure on staff to meet performance targets has remained unchanged.

IBOA general secretary, Larry Broderick, expressed concern that little had changed in Irish banks apart from different personnel at top executive level since the major banking crisis in 2008 which he blamed on the “reckless behaviour” of senior management.

He told the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform that a commitment by his union’s members to change the banking culture was not being reciprocated by current bank managers and said he was disappointed at the lack of accountability by top executives.
