September rainfall up to 173% above average

IN case you hadn’t noticed, rainfall for the month of September was above average everywhere — while poor old Cork had the least amount of sunshine for almost half a century.

September rainfall up to 173% above average

The latest monthly weather report by Met Éireann says above average rainfall was recorded everywhere, with the west and midlands receiving the highest percentages above normal for the time of year.

The highest rainfall totals were noted at Belmullet and Valentia observatories, which both recorded their wettest September since 2005, receiving 173% and 128% of their long-term averages, respectively.

The majority of September’s highest daily falls were recorded on the last day of the month, with the highest, 46.5mm, recorded at Carlow (Oak Park).

It was a slightly warmer month than normal with most stations reporting differences of nearly 1C or more above normal. Stations in the east and north reported the warmest September since 2006.

Most of the highest maximum temperatures for the month were reported on September 28, with Phoenix Park recording a maximum of 25.6C.

Maximum air temperatures reported at all three Dublin sites (Phoenix Park, Dublin Airport and Casement Aerodrome) during September were reported to be the highest since September 2003.
