HSE refuses to name retired officials

THE HSE has refused to release the names of six more retired senior officials given lucrative outsourced contracts after they received severance packages and pensions to leave the system.

HSE refuses to name retired officials

A parliamentary question response said Health Minister James Reilly has been told the information cannot be released due to Data Protection Act issues.

Just two weeks ago, a Freedom of Information (FoI) response to the Irish Examiner overruled a similar decision made in July in relation to former chairman of the HSE Employers Agency, Pat Harvey.

As revealed on September 12, Mr Harvey, who is chair of the state’s implementation body for health sector reform, has received over €1 million in severance fees, non-tendered projects and other pay-outs since retiring in 2005.

It is understood the six retired officials whom the HSE has refused to identify set up consultancy firms after leaving the system.

One of the individuals is hired by the HSE West for “strategic and operational expertise” for a Sligo nursing home. Another has returned to chair a community services dental enquiry review in Co Mayo, while a third is involved in an examination of child care services in the region.

A fourth is working as an engineer with “specialist engineering knowledge” in the Louth Meath Hospital Group, while two more are examining laboratory procedures in the same hospital area.

The response was sent to Fine Gael TD, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy.
