Bra tug-of-war will support fundraising efforts for the Irish Cancer Society
The owner of one of West Cork’s largest lingerie departments wants the women of Ireland to send him their old bras for a novel breast cancer awareness campaign.
Sean Murray, who owns Sean Murray Fashions in Skibbereen, launched his campaign yesterday with the help of Miss Cork Brianna Dougher and Cork Rose Kathryn Brennan.
Mr Murray appealed to women everywhere to send him their old bras, along with a donation to the Irish Cancer Society.
He is planning to use some of the bras to decorate the town throughout October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The collected garments will then be used in a massive tug-of-war event on the town’s Main Street to symbolise women’s ongoing battle against breast cancer.
Ladies who donate an old bra will be offered a free bra fitting, and a 10% discount on any bra bought in-store, with Mr Murray donating a further 10% from every purchase to the Irish Cancer Society.
The store will also host a fashion show at the end of October with all proceeds going to the charity.
“We really wanted to do something different to raise awareness for the Action Breast Cancer Campaign,” said Mr Murray.
“Too many women die each year from breast cancer and all too often it can be avoided by regular check ups and by being aware.
“This campaign is also a fun one so we are asking women from all over Ireland to send us their old bras so we can have a tug-of-war with them.
“It might sound strange but we all need some light-hearted fun in our lives and if it draws attention to the wonderful work done by the Irish Cancer Society while raising funds, then we’ll be very happy.”
Rose O’Dea of the Irish Cancer Society welcomed Mr Murray’s support.
“We hope that women everywhere will send in their old bras to demonstrate their support for woman with breast cancer,” she said.
“I am sure that every woman has at least one or two old bras in a drawer so please send them to Sean Murray’s and help raise vital funds for the family and friends you love.”
More than 2,500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Ireland every year.
Money raised by next month’s campaign will go towards breast cancer research, to help patients and to promote breast cancer prevention and early detection.
Ladies can send their unwanted bras to Sean Murray’s, Main St, Skibbereen, Co Cork.
