Irish rugby fans hope to score in New Zealand ahead of World Cup
Brothel operator Mary Brennan, or Madam Mary to her clients, runs a bondage brothel in Wellington and told reporters that some Irish fans have already pre-booked a visit to her establishment, as have fans from South Africa, Britain and Canada.
Although the Irish have been keen to pay a visit to her establishment, Ms Brennan described the British as particularly keen.
“The English are known to be particularly deviant. Whenever I hear an English accent I know there’ll be some good business there.”
Prostitution has been legal in New Zealand for eight years, making it one of the most liberal countries in the world in terms of the sex industry. For example, Ms Brennan’s brothel is not hidden on the outskirts of the city, but is in a suburban shopping district without any signage.
Like any other business woman, she carries a business card, though it offers services as diverse as “maid training”, “dungeon hire”, “domination”, “wrestling” and “cross-dressing”.
Co-ordinator of the New Zealand Prostitutes’ Collective, Catherine Healy, said that the thousands of rugby fans arriving in the country would be surprised at just how openly the industry operates.
“Paying for sex in this country isn’t against the law.
“There isn’t that whole subterfuge where people say it’s a massage parlour, an escort agency, or we’re just talking. Sex workers here will be far more frank. They’ll say: ‘You can come and visit me at the brothel and these are the sorts of services I provide.’ ”
Ms Healy said there were about 3,500 prostitutes working in New Zealand and that the Rugby World Cup would bring them business on an unprecedented scale.
