Dublin family mourns second murdered son

In a report on 2 August 2011, the Irish Examiner carried a report in relation to the murder on July 31 of Kevin Kenny, 30, of O’Hogan Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin. In the article it was stated that Mr Kenny had previously been prosecuted for assaulting a tourist. We wish to clarify that Mr Kenny was not, in fact, prosecuted in relation to an assault.

Dublin family mourns second murdered son

A TRAUMATISED family has been dealt another tragedy after a second brother was murdered at the weekend.

Kevin Kenny, 32, was fatally stabbed after a violent row in Ballyfermot, Co Dublin, on Sunday night. His brother Martin was shot dead six years ago, aged 22.

Mr Kenny was one of two fatal stabbing victims over the bank holiday weekend. Kevin Joyce, 59, was found dead in an apartment in Salthill, Galway on Sunday night.

A woman, aged in her 30s, was arrested in relation to that killing.

Meanwhile, eight people — four men and four women — were arrested in connection with the murder of Mr Kenny. Four of the women and two of the men were released last night, while two men remained in custody.

Mr Kenny, from O’Hogan Road, Ballyfermot, was fatally stabbed outside a house on nearby Sarsfield Road at about 9.15pm on Sunday. He received stab wounds to his upper body, but managed to stagger across the road to Ruby Finnegan’s pub. It is thought a number of friends and relatives were in the pub socialising and ran out. They tried to comfort Mr Kenny as they rang 999.

Gardaí said he was taken to St James’s Hospital with “serious injuries” and was pronounced dead a short time later. Mr Kenny was assaulted years ago in an intended attack on his brother Martin. Martin Kenny was subsequently shot dead in 2005.

Local councillor Vincent Jackson said: “For something like that to happen once in your life is appalling, but to lose two sons is unbelievable.”

In Galway, detectives continued to question a woman about the stabbing of Kevin Joyce. His body was discovered on the veranda of a first-floor apartment at 10.30pm on Sunday. The woman had minor injuries.

The Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Khalid Jaber, made an initial examination at the scene of the incident before Mr Joyce’s body was removed to University Hospital Galway for a postmortem.

It is understood Mr Joyce returned to Ireland some time ago after spending many years in the US.

Superintendent Noel Kelly of Salthill Garda Station, said: “I would appeal for witnesses, or anyone who noticed anything on Sunday night in Salthill, to contact us.”
