New artistic director a coup for the Everyman
Mr Barker-Caven, who has worked extensively in London’s West End and directed dozens of award-winning shows while based in Ireland for 15 years, will take over from Pat Talbot in September after 10 years in the role.
His appointment is seen as a major coup for the 650- seat Cork venue.
Chairman Michael White announced the appointment last night: “As artistic director, Michael’s wide experience, both nationally and internationally will contribute to the continuing progress and development of the theatre.”
Mr Barker-Caven, who is in his early 40s and married with children, is expected to move back to Ireland.
“It is my intention to continue the outstanding work of my predecessor, Pat Talbot, by providing the theatregoers of Cork with a dynamic and varied programme of contemporary and classical drama, as well as an enticing range of light entertainment and high quality music events,” he said.
“In these challenging times it is essential we all adapt a flexible and creative outlook, and in light of this, it is my intention to actively develop the theatre’s creative relationships with other producers and artists both in Ireland and abroad.”
Mr Barker-Craven recently finished directing Medea for Glimmerglass Opera, in New York, and is due to direct Little Women for the Gate Theatre in Dublin. His other credits include Moll by John B Keane at the Gaiety, and the revival of I Keano, at the Olympia Theatre.
