The exodus will begin from the campsites this morning as thousands of tired music fans begin the journey home after partying at the Kildare festival.

British group Coldplay brought the festival to a close last night and R&B superstar Beyonce earlier kept fans dancing into the evening. Rockers Primal Scream also finished out the night while ex Guns N‘ Roses guitarist Slash enthralled listeners with his performance.

On Friday night, dance group Leftfield played to fans who were drenched after earlier bouts of torrential rain.

Earlier New York stars The Strokes brought the Vodafone Stage alive, belting out classics such as Take It Or Leave It, as well as newer material.

The numbers of ticket holders on the first night of the festival were notedly lower than the predicted 70,000, which promoters MCD insisted was the estimated amount of music fans onsite.

Five male teenagers were also injured in a violent episode over the weekend. The incident happened at the Blue campsite at about 4am on Saturday morning after a row broke out between two groups and the teenagers received slash wounds. Four of the teenagers were treated for their injuries onsite while a fifth had to be taken to Tallow hospital.

But Saturday’s glorious sunshine kept revellers smiling at the tents and at stages across the Punchestown venue.

Damion Hardy, 39, had travelled from London and exclaimed about the festival: “I’m so glad I came. I even got to meet American supermodel Caprice here.”

Soul group Plan B arrived onto the Main Stage in the early part of the evening. Their eclectic mix of tunes included a version of Stand By Me and Seal’s Kiss From A Rose, with Plan B’s smash hits She Said, Writing on The Wall, obviously provo-king mass singalongs from the dancing fans

Other acts that enter-tained on the Saturday included Brandon Flowers, Dublin’s own Imelda May and Deadmau5, who appeared on stage dressed as a ghost and surrounded by a DJ box, which played host to some of the best stage graphics of the weekend.

But that night’s head-line act, Foo Fighters, were undoubtedly the best performance of the day. And with the rain staying away, the US group played a range of their hits including Pretender, Best of You and Everlong.

Frontman Dave Grohl kept the massive crowd enthralled with his heady mix of screams and roaring guitar riffs.

Overall it was a superb weekend, letting Oxegen retain its title as one of Europe’s top music festivals.
