Golfers to tee off for charity
Jack French urged golfers to sign up for the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) Cancer Appeal annual golf classic at the Fota Island Resort in Cork, on Thursday, July 14.
Registration is open for the €400 per team event. But there is a reduced €375 fee for “early bird” entries. The entry fee includes green fees, a goody bag, and lunch or dinner with wine.
Organisers have offered a €50 sponsor-a-hole or tee option for people who can’t play on the day, but who would like to support.
The event will follow a four ball format, with two shotgun starts at 9am (early bird) and 2.30pm.
Mr French said: “We’re expecting 54 teams to participate and we’ll be hoping the sun shines on this magnificent course which is a pleasure to play.”
Mercy Hospital Foundation chief executive, Micheál Sheridan, said the event will be supporting its work in helping to diagnose and treat cancers early and effectively.
Through the Mercy Cancer Appeal, the Foundation has identified four projects which they believe will have a positive impact on cancer care at the hospital, including:
* the development of an Early Cancer Diagnosis and Care Unit for gastro-intestinal cancers;
* the development of a Diagnostics Centre of Excellence to ensure the development of CT and diagnostic scanning facilities;
* the development of a Rapid Access Testicular Cancer Clinic to enable men to see a consultant, have a scan and, if necessary, have blood tests, all in the same day;
* and the hiring of a specialist cancer care nurse in St Therese’s Oncology Unit.
