Relief for village as water boil notice lifted

LOCALS in a Burren village last night welcomed the lifting of a boil notice for its drinking water supply.

Relief for village as water boil notice lifted

Problems with Ballyvaughan’s public water supply emerged last June when the village hosted the Tour of the Burren cycle race.

A boil notice has been in place since February.

Clare County Council and the Health Service Executive lifted the notice ahead of this weekend’s cycle tour. About 700 homes and businesses had been affected.

Alan Clarke of Ballyvaughan Tearooms said: “The problems with the water has been very frustrating to the extent that we had to shut down for a couple of days last summer. It cost us money but the safety of our customers was paramount.

“It is a relief that the boil notice has now been lifted as the tourist season starts to get busy.”

A council spokesman said: “The removal of this notice applies to all water consumers on the Ballyvaughan Public Water Supply including the following group water schemes, Muckinish, Gleninagh, Knocknagrough, Gregans and Newtown.

“The welcome change in status is as a result of the new €5 million Lisdoonvarna Water Supply Scheme extension to Ballyvaughan.
