THE 58 Junior Certificate students at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire on Cork’s northside learn every subject except English through the first language so there were no problems with the higher level Irish paper there.

The vast majority at the school on the historic North Monastery school campus took the honours Irish exams, in contrast to the national trend of less than half of Junior Certificate candidates doing it.

Lauren Mackey from Ballyvolane said she didn’t mind the exam at all, given that all their classes for the last three years have been through Irish.
