SF: Opposition must be dignified and peaceful

SINN FÉIN said it is working closely with gardaí on its plans for an event in Cork city to coincide with the British Queen’s visit next Friday.

The party’s Cork North Central TD Jonathan O’Brien has dismissed security concerns and said organisers are taking a responsible approach, working closely with gardaí, the city council and HSE to ensure that the event passes off peacefully.

“There is no doubt that there are people out there who will welcome the visit, as is their right.

“But I’ve said from day one, that if people are opposed to this visit, then they need to show that opposition in a very dignified and peaceful manner.

“The last thing we want as a political party, and the last thing that the people of Cork want, is trouble on the streets of Cork.

“If anyone has any ideas of going into the city on that day trying to cause trouble then they’d be better served by staying home.

“That sort of action is not to be welcomed or encouraged.”

Mr O’Brien said the Sinn Féin event on Sullivan’s Quay will be a family- focused day of pageantry, featuring music, poetry and some guest speakers. Its sole aim is to celebrate the republican culture and tradition and to provide an alternative event for those opposed to the royal visit.

“This will not be about people waving placards and screaming and shouting,” he said. “It’s about kids dressing up, it’s about poetry and celebrating our culture and our tradition.

“We have taken a very responsible approach to this. If this event wasn’t organised, then you would have very radical groups trying to latch on to people opposed to the visit, trying to organise something more sinister.”

The event, which is open to the public, will take place outside the Fás building on Sullivan’s Quay from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
