Town hit by 2 raids in one day
The arrests were made after gardaí were alerted to a robbery at Kearys Toyota car dealership on the Limerick Road in Mallow.
At approximately 10.30am yesterday two men, one in his late teens and the other in his early 20s, broke into the staff quarters at the dealership and stole purses and mobile phones.
They later stole petrol from the garage and escaped in a Subaru Impreza.
It was later stopped by gardaí, who arrested the two occupants.
The men, believed to be from Limerick, were being detained at Mallow garda station under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act.
Meanwhile, at 11.20am yesterday, a lone raider entered a Cash for Gold shop in the town’s main street and threatened a member of staff with a knife.
Supt Pat McCarthy, who is leading the investigation, said the man was wearing a hoodie and sunglasses when he burst into the shop.
“He was brandishing a knife and stole around €3,000 worth of cash and (gold) jewellery. He also took around €3,000 in cheques as well, but these have since been stopped,” Supt McCarthy said.
He said the robber ran away in the direction of Shortcastle, where it is possible he may have had an accomplice waiting for his in a getaway car.
Supt McCarthy appealed for anybody who saw the Cash for Gold shop raider to contact Mallow Garda Station at 022-20597.
