However, 80,000 tickets at €79 a pop for the concert on Saturday, May 28, have already sold out — and did so in less than 40 minutes.

Oasis were the last band to headline the historic venue, with their gig in 2009 marred by complaints that people could not get back to Dublin for hours afterwards.

A full review of operational matters was undertaken by promoters MCD, Slane Castle, gardaí, Meath County Council and Dublin Bus and a range of improvements will be in place.

Also confirmed to play the iconic Meath castle, owned by Lord Henry Mountcharles, in May are White Lies, Mona and The Whigs.

Returning to Slane may well mean more to Thin Lizzy than anyone else. The band headlined the first Slane Castle show in 1981 and this year marks the 25th anniversary of iconic frontman Phil Lynott’s passing.

Meanwhile, Elbow are fresh from a headline performance at Dublin’s O2 last Thursday, with new album Build a Rocket Boys released to rapturous critical acclaim, taking the number two position in the charts.

However, 80,000 tickets were sold when only Kings of Leon had been announced and there is no doubt they are the main draw. Fifth album Come Around Sundown has sold over six million copies worldwide and broke the record for biggest first week digital album sales with over 49,000 downloads.
