Tongue-wagging attempt to set world Haka record
The group surprised shoppers in Limerick yesterday when they gave an impromptu demonstration of the New Zealand war dance.
They will attempt a world record on April 2.
The record for the biggest Haka was set in New Zealand in February 2008, when 3,264 participants took part in the dance.
LIT student Ciara Lynch said: “With Limerick being named European City of Sport 2011 we decided this was a perfect time to try and break the world Haka record. We are hopeful that the people of Limerick will now get behind us and support us to break this record and we’re confident that they will.”
The LIT students have recorded an instructional DVD so everyone can learn the dance for the big day.
More than 3,500 participants are expected to take part in the record-breaking attempt, while thousands of Munster and Leinster fans will add to the atmosphere as they will be in the city for the eagerly-anticipated Magners League clash between the two provinces.
Ms Lynch said: “All proceeds from the event will be donated to Barnardos Limerick, an Irish charity with a unique vision.
“Barnardos’ vision is an Ireland where childhood is valued and all children and young people are cherished equally.
“LIT students selected this charity as a worthy cause and are delighted to be representing them,” Ms Lynch added.
