Users warned as ATM skimming device found
The device, which can copy PIN numbers and card details, was recovered from an ATM at a SuperValu store in Glanmire on the afternoon of February 5.
Once discovered, approximately 600 official garda text messages were sent to residents advising them to check their bank accounts if they had used the machine in the previous 24 hours.
The text scheme, devised by Glanmire community garda Noel Fitzgerald, involves texting local people if a crime alert is needed.
Glanmire Sergeant Theresa McHugh said a number of people who used the machine in those hours have since reported suspicious activity in their accounts.
“Some people have reported that cash in the region of a few hundred euro has gone missing. We are advising anyone who may have used the ATM to check their accounts.”
Sgt McHugh added that a second garda text alert was sent out yesterday, advising those who used the ATM between 7.30am on Friday and 1.30pm on Saturday last to cancel their cards immediately as accounts were being cleaned out.
“It is vital that people who were known to have used the ATM between these times are contacted as a lot may still not know.”
Sgt McHugh said no one has yet been arrested, but the skimming device has been taken for analysis and CCTV footage of the ATM is being examined.
A garda investigation is also ongoing into the possible discovery of a similar device at an ATM at AIB on Douglas Road.
An AIB spokesperson said if fraudulent activity is confirmed, customers will be reimbursed. Concerned customers are asked to contact their bank.
