Man, 76, dies in house fire

The man, who is believed to be a Galway native, died at the scene after a fire broke out in the living room of his house in Clareview Park in the Ballybane area in the east of the city. Two units of Galway fire brigade battled the blaze for three hours after the alarm was raised at around 3am.

The man’s body was found in the bungalow and the scene was preserved until morning for Gardaí to conduct forensic examinations. Gardaí in Mill Street said they are not treating the fire as suspicious.

“There is no indication that it was caused by Christmas decorations at this point in time and we are not treating the fire as suspicious at the moment,” said the Garda spokesperson.
