Man, 33, fatally stabbed in row between ‘best of pals’
Ambulance crews tried desperately to save the victim when they were called to a house in Cannonbrook Estate, Lucan, west Dublin, at around 7.30pm on Thursday.
Sources said paramedics attempted for 20 minutes to revive the man, named locally as Paul Harris, but to no avail. The 33-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene afterwards.
Mr Harris was visiting his family home where his mother, Rosemarie, lives.
It is understood he was in the house with a close friend at the time.
The crew from the Dublin Fire Brigade alerted gardaí who arrived from the local station within minutes.
They arrested Mr Harris’s friend, aged 25, with an address in north Kildare, at the scene. He was taken to Lucan Garda Station.
Mr Harris had received multiple stab wounds to his torso. The wounds were inflicted with a kitchen knife, which was recovered.
Gardaí contacted the Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist’s Office. They closed off the scene and started a forensic examination inside the house.
Mr Harris’s body remained at the scene overnight pending the arrival of the state pathologist.
A full post mortem was due to take place yesterday.
Mr Harris’s friend was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours, excluding breaks.
A knife found at the scene has been sent for forensic and DNA examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. Results from this will take several weeks.
Gardaí described it as a terrible tragedy. “They were said to be the best of pals. They were hanging out together but some row broke out and one of them got a knife from the kitchen,” said a Garda source.
He said there was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the row.
Family liaison officers have been assigned to the families of the two men.
Gardaí have not issued any appeals for information so far and are continuing inquiries.
