Meeting to tackle West Cork’s algae

MINISTER for Environment John Gormley has agreed to meet a delegation from the Courtmacsherry area to discuss funding for a waste water treatment plant, which is seen as the only viable solution to destroying algal infestation of bays in the area.

Meeting to tackle West Cork’s algae

The algae, commonly known as sea lettuce, has become prevalent in recent years in west Cork and its upsurge is being blamed on nitrates, contained in fertiliser, being discharged untreated straight into the sea.

So far this year it has cost Cork County Council nearly €90,000 to remove 4,754 tonnes of algae from beaches in the tourist haven.

A total of 34 seas lettuce clean-ups have taken place.

In the past few years Inchydoney beach has required the most clean-ups.

However, this year only three of the 34 clean-ups were required in Inchydoney – a clear sign that the occurrence of sea lettuce was not as frequent there this summer.

But on the other hand, 28 of the clean-ups took place at Harbour View near Courtmacsherry, costing a total of €86,000

The cash-strapped council can apply to the Department of Environment to recoup the costs.

Fianna Fáil’s Christy O’Sullivan said the Harbour View statistics were a clear indication that the proposed Timoleague/Courtmacsherry treatment plant must proceed immediately.

“The figures speak for themselves. It’s not a coincidence that a problem that was widespread last year is now confined to Courtmacsherry estuary and its nearby beaches,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

Mr O’Sullivan confirmed he arranged a meeting between Mr Gormley and the Courtmacsherry delegation which will take place in Dublin next month.

“The minister is very aware of the situation. He has indicated to me on several occasions that he’s anxious the find a solution,” the TD said.
