JUST a few hundred motorists were prosecuted for breaking learner driving laws last year, despite thousands of novice drivers being summonsed to appear before the courts.

New figures from the courts for last year show just a small number of learner drivers summonsed were fined or disqualified on the rules, while remaining cases were struck out or withdrawn.

Since mid-2008, all categories of learner drivers on provisional licences must be accompanied while behind the wheel and display L-plates on their vehicle.
