‘We want lessons learned so Louise’s death is not in vain’

AFTER yesterday’s verdict, Roger Murray, solicitor for the Butler family, said they hoped lessons have been learned by the HSE so that Louise’s tragic death may not have been in vain.

‘We want lessons learned so Louise’s death is not in vain’

The family statement said: “For us, it is very important to see justice done. We feel we got that when, in July last, the HSE gave us a written apology as part of the settlement of our civil action.

“The public, at large, and patients especially should listen to Louise’s story. If they, or their loved ones, are ever in a similar position they should stand up for their rights, demand tests and investigations and insist on second opinions.

“We now want to close this painful chapter and move on with our lives as best we can.”

In the High Court on July 12, the HSE issued an apology to the Butler family over the deficiencies and failures which led to the death of Louise.

The apology stated: “The HSE acknowledges, in the care and treatment of the late Louise Butler, there were failures and deficiencies which led to her death. The HSE accepts that Louise’s family did everything they could for her in the circumstances. The HSE wishes to take this opportunity to apologise to the Butler family for the anguish and distress caused to them by Louise’s tragic death.”

The High Court settlement included a payment of €40,000 to the Butler family.
