Peace Project secures Norris as guest speaker
The news followed a huge boost to the project after a former bishop of Derry decided to reverse his decision to cancel a visit to the town after direct flights between Cork and Belfast were reintroduced.
Bishop Edward Daly, who risked his life during Bloody Sunday, had pulled out of the convention, set forOctober, as there were no direct connections between the cities.
And yesterday there was even more to cheer about for organisers of the convention after Senator David Norris agreed to give a talk and visit schools in the seaside town on November 1.
The openly-gay senator, on what will be his first visit to the Co Cork town, has told organisers he wants to focus on human rights issues in the Middle East when he takes part in the peace convention.
The 66-year-old is also likely to face questions on his continuing campaign to secure a Presidential nomination.
One of the project organisers Pádraig Fitzgerald said: “We’re thrilled to confirm that Senator David Norris is coming to Kinsale as a guest of the Peace Project. It’s a great honour to have such a prominent and colourful speaker in the town.
“Surprisingly, it will be his first visit to Kinsale but, hopefully, it won’t be his last. He told us he’s very interested in the work of the Kinsale Peace Project and said he wants to focus in particular on human rights issues in the Middle East.”
Mr Fitzgerald added: “With Bishop Daly’s visit now looking back on and Senator Norris agreeing to visit, it’s been a brilliant week for the Kinsale Peace Project.”
