GAA legend to celebrate language

IF he was so minded then Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh would no doubt deliver an eloquent sporting analogy to mark his 80th birthday, but instead the broadcasting legend has helped to celebrate another of his passions — the Irish language.

GAA legend to celebrate language

The Kerryman yesterday launched a series of Irish language events that will take place on Culture Night on September 24.

The programme of events, at Conradh Na Gaeilge on Harcourt St, will run from 5pm to 11pm, with food, screenings of short films, dancing, free taster Irish classes and exhibitions.

Conradh Na Gaeilge will team up with a number of other Irish language agencies, including Glor Na nGael and Comhluadar, and will form part of the overall range of events taking place across the country as part of Culture Night.

Micheál was quick to point out that one of the events open to people on Culture Night is a free tour of the Museum at Croke Park, and said Dublin Bus will lay on free transport.

His mind is never far from the action on the field, while on the subject of his birthday, he said this one would not be any more special than the last.

“Birthdays were never a big thing in rural Ireland long ago,” he said.

“I think it was more of an urban thing. I knew people who wouldn’t even know when they were born; some people would know they were born in the year that such and such a team won the All-Ireland.”

After attending yesterday’s event he was to travel to Meath, and he said he hoped to be back in hisnative Dingle by the end of the week. There will only be one place he plans on being come Sunday, however, and that is behind themicrophone for the match involving Dublin and “those Cork lads”.

“If they are ever going to win it, this is the year to win it,” he said, music to the ears of Leesiders all too acquainted with the pain of defeat in the final stages of the Championship.

He also has no plans to put the microphone down and take a summer off.

“There are lots of people who would say if they had the summer off they would go to more matches because they would have the time,” he said with his impeccable logic.

Happy birthday Micheál, long may you reign.
